Introduction

Revealing a bipolar disorder diagnosis can be liberating—especially for Black individuals who already face multiple layers of systemic pressure. Living in America while navigating racism, generational trauma, and social stigma is already a heavy burden. Adding a mental health condition like bipolar disorder can feel isolating. But here’s the truth: you can be Black, brilliant, and bipolar—and still be successful.

Some may believe that having bipolar disorder limits success, but countless individuals prove otherwise. This condition doesn’t diminish talent or creativity. In fact, many public figures have used their platforms to raise awareness and challenge stigma. While some celebrities on this list have stirred controversy, all of them show that being Black and bipolar doesn’t erase your legacy—it can reshape it.

Below, we spotlight six Black celebrities who have either confirmed their diagnosis or have been publicly associated with bipolar disorder. Each story reflects a unique journey of resilience, artistry, and impact.

1. Mariah Carey

Confirmed bipolar II diagnosis

In 2018, legendary singer Mariah Carey shared her bipolar II diagnosis in an exclusive cover story with People magazine. Though diagnosed back in 2001, Carey said she lived in denial and fear for many years, worried about how public exposure could damage her career. But once she began treatment, she felt empowered to share her truth (Cagle, 2018). With hits like “Fantasy” and “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” Carey remains one of the most successful artists of all time—proof that mental health conditions don’t define your potential. 

2. Kanye West (Ye)

Originally reported as bipolar, later stated he was misdiagnosed

In 2018, Kanye West seemed to confirm his bipolar diagnosis with the words “I hate being Bi-Polar, it’s awesome” printed on his album Ye. However, in a February 2025 episode of The Download podcast with Justin Laboy, West claimed he had been misdiagnosed and actually has autism. He credited his wife Bianca Censori for encouraging him to seek a re-evaluation (France, 2025). Despite the public debate over his diagnosis, the emotional highs and lows he’s displayed continue to spark broader discussions around Black men, mental health, and public perception.

3. Chris Brown

Diagnosed with bipolar disorder and PTSD according to court documents

In 2014, court documents revealed that singer Chris Brown had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) during a court-ordered rehab stay in Malibu (Breuer, 2014). Although Brown has never publicly confirmed the diagnosis, the report shed light on the emotional struggles he may have faced since rising to fame as a teenager. Known for chart-toppers like “Look at Me Now” and “Residuals,” Brown’s journey reflects the often hidden mental health battles behind celebrity success.

4. Jenifer Lewis

Confirmed bipolar diagnosis at age 32

Beloved actress Jenifer Lewis, often called “The Mother of Black Hollywood,” was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in her early 30s. She opened up about her experience in a 2017 NPR interview and also discussed it on The Oprah Winfrey Show in 2007 (Sanders, 2017). Lewis has consistently advocated for therapy, medication, and breaking the stigma surrounding mental illness—especially in the Black community. Her roles in films like The Preacher’s Wife and What’s Love Got to Do With It have made her a cultural icon.

5. DMX (Earl Simmons)

Publicly discussed bipolar symptoms and substance use

The late rapper DMX (Earl Simmons) openly acknowledged his struggles with bipolar disorder and substance use, particularly during a 2013 interview with Dr. Phil (Alston, 2021). Known for classics like “Party Up (Up in Here)” and “X Gon’ Give It to Ya,” DMX’s life was marked by both immense talent and painful battles. He passed away in April 2021 following a reported drug overdose (Beresford & Rahman, 2021). 

6. Nina Simone

Diagnosed later in life

Musical legend Nina Simone was diagnosed with bipolar disorder later in life. In her memoir I Put a Spell on You, Simone wrote about loneliness and emotional instability—experiences that resonate with many people living with bipolar disorder (Meares, 2022). Despite personal struggles, Simone used her art as activism, inspiring generations with songs like “Feeling Good” and “Mississippi Goddam.” She died in 2003 at the age of 70 (CBS News, 2003). 

Closing Thoughts

Mental illness doesn’t discriminate—but stigma often does. These Black celebrities show us that even in the spotlight, mental health battles are real, complex, and deeply personal. Their stories serve as reminders that you can live with bipolar disorder and still be impactful, creative, and powerful. On this Juneteenth, as we honor freedom and liberation, let’s also celebrate mental health freedom—the right to speak out and be whole.
